Holman Clamp & Lock Ladder Racks: Features, Materials and Vehicle Fit
Carrying ladders above your van can free up interior space for tools and materials. A compatible Clamp & Lock rack adds a defined loading and retention system for the ladders you use throughout the day.
Holman racks, previously sold under the Kargo Master name, are available in steel and aluminum configurations. We can help you compare materials, loading features and vehicle-specific mounting options.
How the Clamp & Lock System Works
Adjustable grips position a compatible ladder, while the movable clamp arm closes into its latch to retain it. The arm can rotate below the crossbow to clear the loading path.
Correct adjustment matters. Check the ladder's rail dimensions, rung arrangement and weight against the rack instructions before loading.
Steel or Aluminum?
| Consideration | Steel | Aluminum |
|---|---|---|
| Weight | Generally heavier in comparable designs. | Generally lighter; confirm the complete installed weight. |
| Corrosion resistance | Protective primer and powder coating help resist rust. | Naturally resists red rust, with protective finishes on applicable models. |
| Purchase cost | Often offers a lower initial cost. | May cost more for a comparable configuration. |
| Capacity | Use the exact rack and mounting-system ratings. | Use the exact rack and mounting-system ratings. |
| Care | Inspect coating damage, hardware and moving parts. | Inspect hardware, contact areas and moving parts. |
Material alone does not establish capacity or suitability. Compare the complete setup, including mounting equipment and any additional ladder positions.
Padded Contact Points
Rubber padding at ladder contact points helps reduce scratching and galling during repeated use. It also provides a cushioned surface where the ladder rests against the rack.
Keep these areas clean and inspect the pads for wear. Padding does not replace proper adjustment or the specified retention system.
Angled Tubes Support the Loading Routine
The outward-angled loading tube provides a contact point while positioning a compatible ladder. Combined with the rotating clamp arm, it helps create a clearer path onto the rack.
Follow the manufacturer's loading sequence rather than improvising around nearby vehicles or obstacles. Leave enough room to control the ladder throughout the movement.
If roof-level handling is difficult for your vehicle or ladder, compare an appropriate drop-down configuration before choosing your rack.
Adjustable Grips and a Lockable Latch
Adjustable grips accommodate compatible ladder profiles within the selected rack's limits. Some ladder types or lengths may require additional supports.
The latch can accept a padlock on applicable configurations, adding access control when parked. Confirm padlock requirements separately and check that the mechanism engages correctly before travel.
A lock is an additional security measure, not a guarantee against theft.
Confirm Vehicle Fit and Mounting Requirements
Applications include compatible GMC Savana and Chevrolet Express configurations, Ford Transit Low Roof models and selected compact vans. Fit depends on the exact vehicle, roof and mounting kit.
Some installations use factory mounting points, while others use rain gutters or approved rails. Do not assume every Clamp & Lock installation uses factory-drilled holes.
- Vehicle details: Confirm year, make, model, roof height and relevant body dimensions.
- Ladder details: Provide type, closed length, rail dimensions and weight.
- Configuration: Choose single or double-sided clamping around your loading needs.
- Mounting equipment: Confirm the required kit and whether drilling is necessary.
- Load limits: Follow vehicle, rack and mounting-system limits.
Clearance: Measure overall height with the rack and ladders loaded. A low-profile rack still adds height to your vehicle.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are Holman and Kargo Master Clamp & Lock racks related?
Kargo Master products were brought under the Holman name. Older images and documents may still show the former branding.
Will the rack hold every extension or step ladder?
No. Check ladder dimensions, weight and required supports against the selected rack's instructions.
Is installation always drill-free?
No single installation claim applies to every vehicle and kit. Review the instructions for your exact configuration before ordering.
Can I choose clamping on both sides?
Double-sided configurations are available for compatible applications. Confirm the correct add-on and mounting setup for your rack.
Does an aluminum rack need maintenance?
Yes. Inspect fasteners, padding, moving components and contact points, and follow the manufacturer's maintenance instructions.
